This post was created as part of the Just Label It campaign in which I am a financially compensated Labeling Advocate. The opinions are my own and based on my own experience.
Moms of all backgrounds have found one issue they agree on. An issue that they’ve deemed important to their families and the choices they make every day. They agree at a level that is completely unprecedented. 93% of them want Quaker to label GMO ingredients. Just Label It released the poll this week that shows moms all across the country are sick of not knowing what is in their food.
This backs up a poll by the Mellman Group that shows nearly 90% of all Americans agree that GMO ingredients should be labelled. Regardless of political party, financial background, education, Americans want GMO ingredients to be labelled.
We should never fear more information.
Consumers should be well-informed and be able to make the choice for themselves how they will feed their family. Besides the desire to want GMO ingredients labelled, moms polled want the brands they’ve trusted for years to stop funding anti-labelling efforts.
Companies spent over $63 million dollars in 2014 on anti-labelling efforts, that’s not including the $105 million spent against state-level efforts. That is a LOT of money being spent to keep Americans in the DARK. Money spent by companies that have for years asked us to trust them.
Gary Hirshberg the chairman of the Just Label It campaign and a co-founder of Stonyfield Farm put it best: “Everyday across the country, kids eat Quaker’s most popular snack – chewy granola bars – and all their moms are asking for is that companies like Quaker support mandatory GMO labeling. Why are they wiling to risk losing the trust of their most loyal customers?”
This is an issue that is going to effect the bottom line of these same companies, 93% of consumers want Quaker to join the movement and label GMO’s. 80% want Quaker to STOP funding anti-GMO labelling efforts. Because mom’s (and all consumers) are becoming more aware of the dangers of chemical exposure.
This chemical exposure is one of the leading faults of GMO use. It creates something called the chemical treadmill. Greater and greater amounts of pesticides, meaning greater and greater amounts of pesticides are getting into the ground water, soil, and food.
Even at the same time as the the American Academy of Pediatrics is calling on the government, schools, parents and medical professionals to take concerted action to protect children from pesticides. Even as the World Health Organization has labelled glyphosate, the primary herbicide used on GMO crops, a probable human carcinogen.
So what can YOU do about all of this? Are you part of the almost 90% of consumers who want to be informed? Then join the over 100,000 people who have signed this petition asking Quaker, and their parent company PepsiCo to support GMO labelling. Then share this post with your friends and family.
Only when we are informed can stand together and demand action. You can learn more about this topic by checking out my post on GMO labeling, or by checking out the Just Label It website. Become an informed consumer, and stand up for your right to know!
