Dirt dessert is a delicious, sinful dessert option that’s easy to make and a hit with the whole family! You can easily make it a perfect Halloween dessert with some gummy worms or gummy pumpkins!
Every once in a while, you need something completely bad for you. No shame whatsoever at it! This dessert is a recipe that I’ve had for years but I only pull out on very special occasions. And by special occasion, I mean a Sunday where I was left home alone all day!!
Meaghan is in Virginia visiting family and Dustin works second shift so I had the whole day to myself. I can’t say I hated it, but I do get lonely when I’m home alone. So I spent some time in the kitchen! I made chocolate chip cookies to take to work for Halloween and I made a batch of dirt dessert too!
When I was 18 I had my first ever apartment that I loved, and my boyfriend and I invited his parents over for dinner and his mom brought dessert. This was my first ever experience with dirt dessert and oh my goodness. I don’t think I shared any of the leftovers. She shared the recipe with me, and now I’m sharing it with you guys!
Which is why I don’t make this very often. Over the last 11 years, I think I’ve made it about 3-4 times and usually when we have a group of people to feed it too! Because I seriously know my struggle with sweets and processed food, I will absolutely eat it all.
Work has been going really well lately, I really love my day job a lot. But it has seriously cut into my time management for everything else I do in life. My oil business. My blog. My social life. I don’t mind, it’s helping us meet our goals and I really enjoy the people I work with. So I don’t mind the sacrifice.
And last week we were talking about potlucks and customer appreciation and I figured why not make some goodies while I’m home alone and then cart them off to work so I won’t eat them all. It’s really a very solid plan.
Which is why we mostly eat whole foods, and I rarely keep Oreos or other processed sweets in the house. I know my struggles, and I limit my temptations. But that doesn’t mean I never ever eat junk food. God, I wish that was the case.
But I refuse to feel guilty for an occasional indulgence, and I refuse to shame anyone else for making that same choice! Sinful desserts can be enjoyed in moderation, and this is one that will absolutely wow everyone who has it. And it’s so easy to make.
It’s a great option for picnics, potlucks, or all those holiday parties coming up! Halloween is today, and if I was more Halloween festive I would have bought some gummy worms and stuck them in the ‘dirt’. Dustin was a little disappointed that I didn’t do that. What can I say, I’m a Halloween Scrooge ;-).
But you do you, and I won’t judge! I’ve even seen cute gummy pumpkins which is really a cool idea too! But I’m a classics kind of girl and I’m good with extra cookies for my dirt dessert. And it’s a good recipe to make with kids because there is no need for the oven. And breaking cookies is always fun.
- 1 package sandwich cookies
- 8oz cream cheese
- 1 tub vanilla pudding
- 1 small tub whipped cream
- 1/2 cup butter
- Take two rows of cookies and crush them up I do it right in the 9x13 pan but you can do them in a bag first.
- Melt the butter, pour it over the cookies and spread it into the bottom of the pan.
- In a bowl mix one cup of pudding, the softened cream cheese together. It'll be lumpy.
- Fold in the whipped cream.
- Spread over the cookie crust.
- Take the last row of cookies and crush them, sprinkle over the top.
- Put it in the fridge for 1-2 hours before eating!
