Have you ever heard of an intentional living community? Probably not. It’s like a commune or a cult, but without the kool-aid. Or like a Kibbutz or Monestary without the religion. The idea behind an intentional living community is coming together with others and living on the same property with a shared goal or purpose.
For us, it all started with this article on something called a Besties Row. A group of friends came together and built tiny houses on a shared piece of property. It sparked our imagination it was something we talked about it every time we hung out with our closest friends. We’d joke about how great it would be to live on the same property and get away from the world.
Somewhere along the way those talks started to take form and we realized that we actually, seriously, wanted the same things. And it just made sense. Pooling resources to create something amazing and living our dream. None of us could afford the homestead of our dreams alone…but together? We can create anything.
Then the research started, and come to find out, intentional living communities are actually a legit, non-cult thing! They can look like just about anything you could imagine. From a shared house, apartment complex, to a homestead or farm. We’ve even got a couple within an hour of us!
Since those intial conversations we’ve actually zoned in quiet nicely on what we want. The 5 of us have been meeting regularly, making lists, coming up with ideas of what we’ll need to make this work, and are working out the legalities now. None of us want to go into this with our eyes closed and create a disaster. Instead we’re being smart and covering all of our bases.
We’re starting an LLC that will own the property, we’re working on documenting our goals and requirements for ownership. We’re figuring out how we want our homestead to run on a day to day and long term basis. We’ve all got our own talents and strengths to bring into this venture, and over the next year we’ll be doing a lot of joint vacation time to make sure we can live together and not drive each other bonkers.
The idea is pretty straight forward though. Together as an LLC we will buy our property and each person will build their own small house on the property. Together we’ll build a larger community building/house that will be where we share our dinner meal together and spend time together. For us it is important that we all have our own spaces.
Some of us will work outside the community, some of us will work from home full time. We’ll raise as much of our own food as possible, create goods on the property to sell in the community, and of course I’ll blog about all of this. It’s going to be a lot of work, but for the 5 of us, we couldn’t imagine a better life.
If you’re interested in learning more about an intentional living community I’ve got a couple great resources listed below where I’ve learned a lot about this. And of course be sure to check back here for updates on our own little community. Surprisingly the hardest part so far has been coming up with a name other than besties row…and we finally settled on one over Thanksgiving….Paradise Homestead!
